Who We Are

Deerstream is an independent, board-governed, nonprofit organization, offering classes and support to homeschool families from across the Triangle area. We provide students with academic instruction from a Christian perspective; teachers seek to help children recognize the hand of God in all they study and do.

The mission of Deerstream Learning Center is two-fold:

  • To provide a classroom experience for homeschoolers, taught in a Christian environment by qualified faculty;
  • To offer homeschooling parents support for their own teaching.

Deerstream is not a school.  Deerstream students are legally registered as NC homeschoolers, and their parents retain responsibility for their children’s education.  Deerstream classes and teachers offer guidance, inspiration, enrichment, hands-on experiences, class discussions, and labs.  These activities are designed to be an extension of and a support to the homeschool.

What We Do

Classes for our younger students (PreK – 5th grade) emphasize the joy of learning in community.   They are characterized by hands-on activities, curious learners, and wide-ranging content.  Our older (6th grade – High School) students tackle traditional academics through courses that challenge and inspire them to grow as independent learners. Students are assigned homework that they are expected to complete at home throughout the week.   Teachers use class time to present core concepts and opportunities to engage deeply with learning. Teachers partner with parents by providing clear course descriptions, class requirements, and assessments of student work.

 The Role of the Parent at Deerstream

At Deerstream, parents retain their role as the primary educators for their children.  Deerstream Teachers of younger students (PreK-5th grade) do not assign homework so these children can spend time outside of class engaged in their core homeschooling activities with their parents.  Deerstream Teachers of older students (6th grade – High School) partner with homeschooling parents.  Parents are expected to…

  • set the course for their student’s academic plan
  • help students organize their weekly work
  • remain actively and consistently involved with their students during the week’s work
  • encourage their student to communicate with the teacher about questions
  • be ultimately responsible for assigning course grades and creating transcripts
